Ajay will soon be returning to his studio in Jaipur and Kendal will be making the journey back down the escarpment to the Illawarra.

To celebrate both exhibitions and to give everyone the opportunity to say good-bye to Ajay, and to Kendal, and even hello, we are going to cook up a big pot of delicious chai. This is your chance to catch the final hours of Past Continuous and Screen Memories and to see the incredible accomplishments of Ajay’s students.

We are thrilled to announce that Ajay Sharma is returning to Sydney from Jaipur for his second solo exhibition, Past Continuous, at AirSpace Projects. He will be exhibiting a unique series of works as well as paintings in the Indian miniature painting tradition.

In the series Past Continuous, Ajay Sharma expresses his love and respect for the wonderful legacy of traditions handed down by his ancestors: ‘It is still very much part of us, part of our culture and of our identity.’ Yet all around him Ajay Sharma is witness to the decay of these traditions and the destruction of the exquisite remnants of the past as India undergoes rapid modernisation and social change. His work provides a profound commentary on the collision of old and new and poses the question as to whether or not anything can be done to save this legacy.

Screen Memories

This series takes its title from Freud’s term ‘screen memory’, used to describe a vivid but banal memory that functions to hide another, more traumatic one. The series also plays with other ideas related to screens and memory-images, and how one image can give rise to another through association. Screen Memories uses contemporary and historical photographs in a series in which images from different times and places interact, creating an interplay of narratives within the gallery space.

The exhibition Iconoclasts takes the etymology of the word ‘Iconoclast’ literally as a ‘breaker of images’. Artists explore this concept individually and collaboratively with the directive to ‘break’ each other’s images, resulting in paintings that are layered, excavated and ‘Frankensteined’ in the style of exquisite corpse.

 This project is supported by Arts NSW’s NSW Artists’ Grant Scheme, a devolved funding program administered by the National Association of the Visual Arts on behalf of the NSW Government.

AirSpace Projects is expanding it’s exhibition space into the indoor driveway and basement next door. The new development also includes a workshop/seminar area as well as an outdoor courtyard where Sarah Newall is currently undertaking a three-month sustainability project. To celebrate this expansion, we are holding a group exhibition called Openings. Artists will be interpreting the term as they see fit.

The Year Is About To Get Underway

We have been busy behind the scenes at AirSpace Projects preparing for the expansion of our space into the indoor driveway and basement next door. It’s been a lot of hard work but we’re almost there! Frank ter Meulen of Dutch Touch did a sterling job building platforms, stairs and walls, we couldn’t have asked for a better job. Then the painting day working bee got underway. Huge thanks to James Nyugen, Veronica Habib, Veronica Shen, Ciaron Begley, Janine Bailey and George. Sally has been refining her concreting skills to fill in various gaps and has just one more coat of paint to do on the floors before it’s pretty much done.

There will be three new exhibition spaces to add to the main gallery: Gallery Two, The Cranny and Deep Space. The spaces vary in size and can be reserved individually or in groupings. We have already received inquiries and while we have not yet called for proposals and uploaded information to our blog, we are accepting proposals and are very happy to discuss the conditions and your ideas with you. Information coming soon on the blog!

We now also have a permanent workshop area. Li Wenmin and her Drawing Through Journey class has tested out the new workshop area and if the resulting drawings are any indication, the space is working brilliantly!

Alex Falkiner will be running her ever-popular workshops Drawing With Thread (un-embroidery) on Sunday 25 January 1.00-4.00pm and Stitching Off The Page (fancy edgings) on Saturday 31 January from 1.00-4.00pm.

Courtyard Residency

Sarah Newall is undertaking a three-month residency from February until the end of April to transform the dilapidated courtyard at the rear of AirSpace Projects into a sustainable gardening project. Where possible she is using recycled materials and even recycling an artwork donated by Francesca Mataraga! The garden will be a work-in-progress and you are welcome to visit during openings and opening hours.

Intimate Worlds and January Workshops

In January Li Wenmin will be running two fabulous workshops Drawing For Beginners and Drawing Through Journey in the soon to be opened workshop area. Check Workshops on our menu for more information.

Wenmin is a practising artist who specialises in drawing. She trained in Beijing and has acquired a PhD (Fine Arts) from the College of Fine Arts, UNSW. Wenmin has been teaching at a tertiary level for well over ten years and is well positioned to not only assist you to acquire skills in drawing but also to build an understanding of what drawing is and the role of drawing in contemporary art today. Li Wenmin is represented by Flinders Street Gallery.

Alex Falkiner will also be re-running her popular Drawing With Thread and Stitching Off The Page on 25 and 31 January respectively. More details to come.

AirSpace Projects will be opening again on Friday 6 February 2015 with Iconoclasts. Stay tuned for details.

Artists Susan Andrews, Allan Giddy, James Nguyen & Yin Lan Soon, Mark Titmarsh and Laura Woodward will be engaging with motion or the idea of motion to reflect on the kinds of change or states of flux experienced in the world today. Their work, which range from paintings to video and sculpture, offer a political, social, cultural, philosophical or environmental response – however abstractly or metaphorically conceived – to the change observed.

The exhibition will conclude with an In Motion projection and performance night. The normally quiet Junction Street of Marrickville will come alive for two hours on Saturday 22 November from 7.30-9.30pm as artists project and perform their work in AirSpace Projects and in neighbouring properties. Event to be opened by Marrickville Mayor, Councillor Mark Gardener, followed by a Fan demonstration by Master Sue Chang of Tai Chi Fitness Australia. See Upcoming Exhibitions for more details.

Emerging artists Yang-En Hume, Juliette Furio, Veronica Habib and Thomas Quayle collaborate to explore contemporary significations of the human fragment. The exhibition highlights the fragility of the human body and humanity’s destructive capabilities. Come along, have a drink and discuss this intriguing work with the artists.

Exhibition is open from 11.00am Friday 3 October and closes 5.00pm Saturday 18 October.
