Get In Motion on the opening night as Junction Street is activated with experimental audio visual sets, performance artists on utes, videos hidden in car boots and art around every corner.
Held at AirSpace Projects in Marrickville, the controversial site of the Sydenham to Bankstown Urban Renewal Corridor, the In Motion Festival 2016 will navigate what it means to be ‘in motion’ and, in contrast, ‘still’ in a time of rapid urban, technological and ecological development. Drawing ideas and potency from this impending change to the local area, In Motion Festival 2016 will pose questions: What are we moving towards and away from? What does it mean to be in motion? How do we navigate a world in constant rapid change? The In Motion Festival 2016 will present dynamic and innovative contemporary multi-arts practice that sits at the nexus of contemporary art, performance and film.

Every Saturday (8, 15 and 22 October) for the duration of the festival, AirSpace Projects will house public programs, performances, talk series and more from 1 – 3pm. Experience everything from future conspiracy theory talks to experimental adventure dance performances around the Marrickville area.

LOCOMOTION
Curated by Katie Winten and Nerida Ross
Locomotion will explore the physicality of movement and motion. This dance-orientated event will explore movement as a form, a gift or a process of transformation.
Angela Goh: 1161
1161 is what GC 161 and T 1000 adds up, or melts down to. A puddle of naivety and violence, somewhere between teenage girl and calculated villain. Neither good nor evil, it assumes all forms in order to become formless.

Ivey Wawn will be the human embodiment of a love virus.
Brianna Kell: Flow
Over an extended period of time, Brianna Kell will generate a series of movements that are neither sporadic nor repeated. She aims to connect with viewers in order to facilitate their passage into her unique realm of motion. Participants will shift, hum and vibrate through the space thereby building a connection between those who enter it with those that have already passed through it. The energy of the space will mount as each group enters and everyone dances the actions they connect with most, allowing a snake of time to be realised.
Deb Mansfeild: Just Dance
JUST DANCE is a free-form dance session that runs for about an hour and twenty minutes. It’s a structured mix of music genres and pace. It’s about dancing however you want. It’s not DJ set – there are spaces between the songs – and time spent on the dance floor is about experimenting with free-form dance and ideas.

In Motion Festival 2016 will amplify the relationship between sound and motion, utilising audio to provoke action or, in opposition, introduce stillness.

The Splinter Orchestra is a large-scale electro-acoustic improvising ensemble based in Sydney, Australia. For 13 years they have provided a forum for musicians to improvise and experiment in a large group setting. Playing together is the fundamental activity, and the group meets regularly to do just that.
Splinter strives to replace the almost military-like regimentation of most orchestral tropes to provide a communal structure in which individual musicians are free to experiment with sound. Creating an environment where players can create, despite differing layers of experience, is a complex socio/political, perhaps even idealistic exercise. However, the sounds produced by the orchestra result in unique and powerful experiences for both audiences and performers. Space and context play a key part in shaping the music of the Splinter Orchestra. As improvising musicians, the group aims to maintain an awareness of their environment, spatial and acoustic, together with their own individual sonic contributions and those of their fellow players. There is a clear relationship between sound and space.
During Sound In Motion, the Splinter Orchestra will perform an extended work that traverses the unique structure of AirSpace Projects in Marrickville.
Nicola Morton
Nicola Morton is an electronic music artist that uses DIY experimental processes in composition and performance. Among her diverse approaches to music-making is her recent experiments with smart phones, Wi-Fi and psychic ability during the full moon. National Film and Sound Archive has collected a set of her solo experimental electronic recordings. She has released on Australian DIY labels: Breakdance the Dawn; Alberts Basement and European labels: Musica Dispersa and LF Records.
Nicola Morton will be improvising with synthesizers and an antenna tuned to respond to the Wi-Fi in 2 android phones and then perform: WIRELESSPSYCHICS EXPERIMENT #10: SWITCH ON/FULL MOON Share the crazy energy of the full moon with someone in your home.
Give them 2-3 Wi-Fi capable devices, whilst you shut your eyes, ask them to switch the Wi-fi ON in only one of the devices. Then you can open your eyes (or keep them shut) and pick the device with the Wi-Fi turned on. Can be done IRL or over Skype etc

Informal Reading and Conversation from 3pm
In Motion Festival 2016 interrogates the tension between movement and stasis that exists within the notion of progress.
As part of an extensive public program designed to consider this notion, Benjamin Forster presents ‘a.library,’ a day-long event (11am-5pm) exploring all things knowledge, reading, power and progress. At 3pm the artist will host an informal reading and conversation around his work a.library, housed temporarily at Air Space for one day only.
Beginning with a brief introduction in how to borrow and add to this temporary offline digital library, Benjamin will also open up a conversation around the social production of knowledge and his growing antagonism toward its privatisation. Bring along a laptop and some of your own writing, or that which currently holds your eyes, and contribute both to this accumulating local archive, and the conversation.
In recent years, Benjamin Forster has exhibited at The MCA, Sydney in 2012 and The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne in 2013. In 2016 he has enjoyed a year-long studio residency at Artspace and continues his role as deputy chair on the board of Frontyard in Marrickville, where a.library has been previously installed.

Laura Woodward Talks About Resonate
Laura Woodward from Melbourne (pictured here with partner Jem Selig Freeman) has worked in the field of kinetic sculpture and installation for over ten years. Her current artistic research involves the creation of looped systems embodied in sculptural installations.
“The project focuses upon those subtle, nuanced movements that can be found in organisms, in humans, and in machines, resonating across and between the animate, the inanimate, and the human-made: vibrations, tremors, twitches, pulses, rhythms, and the systems that underlie these movements…”
