Glitter Is Going Under!

‘Glitter is going under!’ So declared Le Corbusier in his critique of ornament. I like to imagine him emphatically banging a lectern with his fist when he says this, or maybe it’s uttered with a cool and confident voice in a smoky men’s club while sipping whisky. There’s no glitter or gilded edges in our installation; but there is flocking, felt, golden curves and ornament with no formal function.

Nuha Saad works in between assemblage, painting and sculpture, combining ready-made objects and colour in inventive configurations. Saad is drawn to objects with only half-formed associations, not quite hand-made, not quite mass manufactured, simultaneously open and resistant to manipulation … Saad’s artistic project questions whether decoration is supplementary or integral to design. Saad singles out elements that despite their ornamental intent are often overlooked, absorbed into the architecture and rarely distinguished by colour. Through cutting, arrangement and colour, the dormant beauty and sensuality of the object comes to life. And so do their buried narratives. Nuha Saad is a Sydney based artist who has exhibited extensively in both solo and group exhibitions, in both public and commercial galleries and was represented by James Dorahy Project Space in Sydney for 7 years prior to its closure in 2013. Past exhibitions include projects for James Dorahy Project Space, Sydney; Gitte Weise Gallery, Sydney; Art Gallery of New South Wales; Artspace, Sydney; UTS Gallery, Sydney; Tin Sheds Gallery Sydney; Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery; Casula Powerhouse; MOP Projects, Sydney; Firstdraft, Sydney; Grace Cossington Smith Gallery, Sydney; Gallery 4A, Sydney; Newcastle Regional Gallery NSW; RMIT Gallery, Melbourne; Penthouse and Pavement, Melbourne; Benalla Art Gallery Victoria; Downtown Artspace, Adelaide; and Queensland University of Technology Art Museum.
Nuha Saad is currently working on three public art commissions including Wulaba Park at Green Square, part of a City of Sydney Project. Previous public art commissions include Skippedy Skip Fence for the City of Sydney, a 50 metre multi-coloured school fence and bus stop in commemoration of the school’s 150 years; and the re-design of Jubilee Square also for the City of Sydney. Saad has also been awarded an Australia Council New Work Grant; Artspace Gunnery Artists Studio; Pat Corrigan Artist Grant; City Art Institute Sculpture Award; and has been a finalist in the Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award; Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize; Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship; NSW Ministry for the Arts Women and Arts Fellowship; RBS Emerging Art Award; ABN AMRO Art Award and the Blake Prize.
Nuha Saad completed a Masters of Visual Arts by Research at Sydney College of the Art, University of Sydney; and a Bachelor of Visual Arts at City Art Institute.
