Artist Talk with Jasmin Stephens

Phaptawan Suwannakudt gave the name ‘Butterfly’ to a tree at her home in Thailand when she was eight years old. She recently found the same type of tree at the local school in Sydney where her daughter studies and next to the studio where she recently undertook a residency in Chiang Mai. This exhibition relates to personal stories while also addressing global issues of place and communications between cultures.

Artist Talks
From 2pm Sunday 6 March

Renown artists Phaptawan Suwannakudt and Marie McMahon will be joined by Jasmin Stephens  to discuss their exhibitions and practices and answer your burning questions. Both artists have exhibited widely and have had their work collected by major institutions.  This promises to be a stimulating conversation. All welcome.

Jasmin Stephens is a Sydney-based curator and writer whose experience extends across Australia and Asia. A regular panel assessor, exhibition judge and mentor, she has recently written for Art Monthly Australia, ArtAsiaPacific and Artlink. Following a residency with The Reading Room in Bangkok in 2013, Jasmin Stephens has been working with Thai artists on exhibitions in Australia and Southeast Asia. Stay on from 3.00-3.30 for tea and informal conversation.

From 11-5 the exhibiting artists will be present to informally discuss their work and answer your questions. It’s a great day to hang out at AirSpace Projects! Feel free to bring along a picnic and supplement it with pickings from Sarah Newall’s garden in Outer Space.

ARTIST PROFILE

Phaptawan Suwannakudt has exhibited and participated in exhibitions in Australia and internationally for over thirty years. She has work in public collection including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Bank Sydney, Thai Embassy Paris and private collections in New York, Australia, Europe, Hong Kong and Thailand.

Recent Solo Exhibitions include: Retold-Untold Stories, Chiang Mai University Art Centre, 2014; Days of (endless) Meaninglessness. Selected Group exhibitions: 2014 Retold-Untold Stories, Chiang Mai University Arts Centre, 2013 ORIENTing: With or Without You, Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, UWA Western Australia; Thresholds: Contemporary Thai Art, Sundaram Tagore, New York, 2012; All our relations, 18^th Biennale of Sydney; 2011-2012 Edge of Elsewhere, Campbelltown Arts Centre.

Publications include: Geczy, Adam ‘Uncertainty is Certain: the Work of Phaptawan Suwannakudt’ in, Eyeline, 81 July,2014; Smith, Terry Placemaking/Dicplacement, A Sense of Place, publication that accompanied the exhibition A Sense of Place at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College, Clinton, New York, 2013.
