Zonation

The word ‘zonation’ is used in natural history writing to describe the patterns of distribution of life forms in bands and zones.
Marie McMahon has borrowed the word to describe an aesthetic zonation in which the elements repeat the patterns of zonation found in the intertidal zone and splash zone – and in concentrations of bracket fungus in the bush. Zones, bands and patterns belong equally to the domain of the artificial.
The artworks are generally about the landscape of Botany Bay National Park – so close to home and so redolent of colonial exploration – and draws on the work of artists and designers of the past who have created new forms that fall within the definition of ‘Organic’ and ‘Free-flow’.
The fieldwork for this project has been conducted along the walking tracks at Botany Bay National Park and on the rock platforms at Cruwee Cove and Cape Banks.
Marie McMahon is a Sydney artist whose work has touched on social, political and environmental themes. Her earlier exhibitions took the nature of the Northern Territory as the subject: site, flora, culture, significance and environmental effects. More recently she exhibited works about Cambodia. Her current works look closer to home.

Renown artists Phaptawan Suwannakudt and Marie McMahon will be joined by Jasmin Stephens to discuss their exhibitions and practices and answer your burning questions. Both artists have exhibited widely and have had their work collected by major institutions. This promises to be a stimulating conversation. All welcome.
Jasmin Stephens is a Sydney-based curator and writer whose experience extends across Australia and Asia. A regular panel assessor, exhibition judge and mentor, she has recently written for Art Monthly Australia, ArtAsiaPacific and Artlink.

From 11-5 the exhibiting artists will be present to informally discuss their work and answer your questions. It’s a great day to hang out at AirSpace Projects! Feel free to bring along a picnic and supplement it with pickings from Sarah Newall’s garden in Outer Space.
