To distill is a process of extracting essential elements from something; condensing and condensing until the abstracted essence is all that remains. Sophie Clague has applied this process as a means to concentrate her large-scale and sculptural practice into a series of wall works that retain the material sensibilities of previous projects and yet conform to a self-imposed limitation of scale. The other process she explores is the distillation of electrical diagrams into glyph-like symbols, which are then re-created sculpturally. Both streams of inquiry engage in a tension between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, and hover somewhere between image and form. These distillates overlap in their materiality and the symbol-like aesthetic that has resulted from the process.
